Kakadu
The Kakadu national park is perhaps
the best-known of the Territory's extraordinary natural assets.
Its World Heritage status ensures its popularity, and it is the largest
of Australia's mainland national parks. You can drive here on
sealed roads from Darwin or Pine Creek. The park is open all the
year round, but some parts may be closed in the Wet due to dangerous
conditions.
Kakadu ranges from the mangrove wetlands
of the coast and estuaries, through rainforest and savannah to gorges
and the high sandstone Arnhem plateau. It has numerous waterfalls,
billabongs, rivers and gorges and an incredible abundance of wildlife,
including marsupial and other mammals, great reptiles and any number
of birds and fish.
