Darwin Crocodile Farm
The Darwin Crocodile Farm, situated
off the Stuart Highway about 40km south of Darwin, runs a captive breeding
program of saltwater crocodiles (crocodylus porosus) to produce
high quality meat and skins. A further aim of the farm, run under
the Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife Commission's Crocodile
Management Program, is to raise funds to help protect the wild population
of crocodiles in a sustainable manner.
Crocodiles, like sharks, have fascinated
and terrorised Australians for a long time. Considered a dangerous
pest, they were hunted to within a few hundred individuals in the wild
until they were protected in the 1970s. So successful has their
resurrection been since then that they are no longer considered endangered.
